Far from the crush of other Chinese cities, it is becoming developed and is a major tourist destination. Like many places in China, its history can be traced further back than many nations in the West. From the Han dynasty, Guilin became the political and economic center of Guangxi, in City or the countryside, many acient heritadges can be seen, such as Wang Cheng, which was a Ming dynasty palace, Ling Canal, which located in Xing’an County 70km north of Guilin, built from 219 to 214 BC.
As a city, many sights are located within thetown or a short distance away, such as The Solitary Beauty Peak, Wave-Subduing Hill, Guilin Water System and so on. Beijing looks so much better once you're pedalling, a bike shortens those long dreary stretches, avoids the footpath throng, and helps you feel a lot more like a local.
Making Your Trip Easy
Airport: The airport is approximately 32km west of the Guilin. There are airport shuttles buses to the city and a taxi should cost about RMB 80. The city has many domestic connections and some international flights.
Bicycle: Bikes can be rented from hotels and the many bike shops lining the streets.
Bus: Short distance buses, such as to Yangshuo or Xiang'an, depart from the front of the train station and the main bus station, which is north of the train station.
Taxi: Full-size taxis are RMB 7 at flag-fall. Most taxi rides around RMB 20. Motorcycle taxis are around RMB 5 per trip.
Train: Guilin has connections to most major cities. The station is located to the southwest of the city.
Food and Restaurants
Southern cuisine reigns supreme here with Guilin's cuisine a mixture of Guangdong and Hunan styles. Special emphasis is placed on critters drawn from the Li River; specialties in clude the exotic, such as snake, dog and assortr\ed types seafod should be the most unusual you encounter.
Well-known area specialties include stuffed snails and pijiu yu, a local catfish simmered in a delicious beet broth. Dog hotpot and horsemeat with rice noodles are local specialties.
